As a school that develops and shapes well-rounded individuals, CIS ensures that academics and other programs have university preparation at their core. Guidance Counselling is an intrinsic part of our repertoire, in addition to the IGCSE offered by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in Grades 9 & 10 and the rigorous IB Diploma Program in Grades 11 & 12.

Our guidance counsellors understand that having studied in an international environment, each student will have specific interests that are not limited by geographic boundaries. CIS supports the need to nurture the future aspirations of each student. Our students have been accepted to schools all over the world based on their interests and aspirations.

Choosing an institution for post- Secondary education is a defining, pivotal moment in any student’s life. CIS recognizes this. Our counselling program helps students develop academically, socially and culturally to realize their full potential as unique human beings.

At CIS, we understand the complexities of finding and applying to the right colleges. Our counsellors conduct individual and group sessions with students, teachers and parents as early as Grade 8. This continues through to Grade 12.

CIS guidance counsellors initially spend time understanding each student completely, carefully assessing their higher education and career goals, before helping to plan for their future. We at CIS understand that it’s a huge task keeping track of what is needed to get into one’s desired college. Our counsellors are always present to help students, supporting them through the process right from Grade 9 until they are accepted into the university of their choice. The process involves parents and the student, taking into consideration all the criteria required to ensure that the student enters the right university.

Every year, CIS organizes a work experience program aimed at students of Grade 10, at the end of their IGCSE exams. The purpose of this experience is to provide wellorganized and researched work experience in a career field that fits the student’s interests and goals. Students are offered opportunities to experience the workplace in a variety of organizations, ranging from IT and hotels to hospitals and engineering. Students come away with experience that guides them when they make
plans for their future.

While making this decision, several criteria need to be considered:

  • Academic Ability
  • Co-op Opportunities
  • Finance
  • Geographic Location
  • Strength of Program

I want to ensure acceptance. How many colleges should I apply to?

  • A maximum of 8 applications to the USA
  • A maximum of 6 applications to Canada
  • A maximum of 5 applications to the UK
  • For other countries, this number will vary

Do you organize SAT coaching? Are you an SAT center?

CIS is an SAT testing center (center number 63377). Our students take their tests in the comfort of a familiar environment. At CIS, we also organize SAT/ACT coaching as an external program spread across 3 months, with extra coaching for individual students closer to the date of testing. It uses a successful combination of 8 classes
in school on Saturdays and supplementary online work/study sessions. These are continuously monitored by the organizer and can be monitored by the parent as well.

Will I be eligible for financial assistance?

Financial aid for the international student is available, but is dependent mainly on the merit of the student and financial need. In general, universities are eager to attract quality students and are willing to support them, once admitted, if they are unable to meet the costs of education.

What are the tests required for application to universities?

Requirements vary from country to country. The most commonly known ones are SAT, SAT with Essay, SAT subject tests, ACT, TOEFL and IELTS. Other countries often have subject-specific or college-specific tests.

How do I choose a topic for my college essay?

Choosing a topic for the college essay can be tricky. Students brainstorm with the counsellor before coming up with a suitable topic. Students send drafts of the essay to be approved by the counsellor before submission.

CIS is a culturally-rich mosaic, serving each student by providing a world-class international education, nurturing potential, developing life-long skills, and preparing students for an ever-changing global community.
