Inspiration through a global approach to art

A GLOBAL APPROACH TO ART

Conceived to explore and optimize the creativity in every child, the CIS Visual Arts Program for Elementary and Middle School enhances students’ impressions of the world they live in through the language of visual arts in a comprehensive, engaging way. In this process, they continuously sharpen and hone their powers of observation, imagination, and out-of the-box thinking.

  • Develop aesthetic awareness and creative nuances in drama, dance and literature
  • Encourage and foster problem-solving in a creative, result-oriented manner
  • Encourage individuality and enterprise •Enhance students’ sensitivity and enjoyment of visual, aural, tactile and spatial aspects
  • Explore, clarify and express ideas, feelings and experiences through an activity-led approach
  • Foster a sense of excellence and appreciation of every art form (regional, national & global) in both historic and present contexts
  • Learn, develop and acquire new techniques and the necessary forms of creative expression of different art styles
  • Nurture a critical appreciation of the arts for personal fulfillment
  • Nurture, value and protect every student’s self-esteem, con dence and power of self-expression

WHAT DOES IT ENCOMPASS?

Like everything at CIS, this program is holistic in its approach. Art is interpreted as the entire universe of visual arts – right from forms, genres and styles that include traditional drawing, painting, sculpting, print-making, architecture and even photography. To add relevance and a contemporary value, this program also includes commercial art, traditional art, and fine crafts.

CIS INTERCONNECTIVITY APPROACH

Creativity is the focus of all that our students do. The entire Visual Arts program encourages problem-solving. For example, a muralist is invited to provide the artistic context to an historic moment while involving students into the relevant Visual Art activities.

The CIS Visual Arts program is designed to help students:

  • Collaborate, cooperate and appreciate peer talents
  • Develop self-discipline
  • Encourage the power of expression • Foster curiosity

The most instinctive form of communication, Drawing unleashes the imaginations of young minds.

A vivid medium of expression, the CIS Visual Arts Program holds the medium of paint in high significance. Paint is fluid; the outcome is immediate. CIS encourages the adventurous and innovative use of colour. Awareness of one’s surrounding through colour and paint, through individual creativity and referencing works of other artists is another primary objective.

This aspect sharpens students’ understanding of relationships between shapes and colours, experimenting with patterns and the impact they have. Understanding the image-making process and the uses of print in everyday life is an integral part of learning through this medium.

When it comes to expressing one’s imagination, few mediums offer the freedom of Clay. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to interact with imaginative mediums such as craft, pottery and sculpture.

Like clay, the medium of Papier-Mâché encourages students to explore and understand three-dimensional forms.

Construction activities which involve a variety of three-dimensional materials increase spatial awareness, encourage creativity and innovation, better one’s understanding of structure in the surrounding environment.

This medium encourages students to invent, create and design at all levels. Structures, patterns, textures and colours are taught as avenues for creative expression and in understanding colour, tone, shape and rhythm. As students get familiar with the medium, they are encouraged to use it in more complex ways and contribute ideas for traditional crafts and contemporary designs.

To complement the above-mentioned mediums, film and video are added as part of the program. Care is taken, however, to maintain the desired balance between activities in the 2D and 3D mediums.
