Melanie Kells

Dean of Studies

Academics are the core and purpose of any school. All members of the CIS community collaborate to help our students gain the knowledge and the skills required to be successful in our ever-changing world. In our early years, elementary, and middle school the Cambridge Secondary 1 curriculum (Math, Science, English, and Technology) and Ontario curriculum provide teaching and learning goals. Students study one additional language in Middle School, with those new to English studying extra English. Spanish, French, and Hindi are the language options from Grade 4 – 8. Mother Tongue French, Dutch, Spanish, German, and Japanese are also available for students from SK to grade 8.

Since 2011, all students from grade 6-12 learn in a one to one iPad environment. Students in
Grades 11 and 12 choose six subjects to study extensively and deeply. We truly believe that the strong IGCSE background provides all IB students with the information needed to study the six subjects that are most appropriate for them as they proceed on to college or university. Our IB programme earns students placements into a great variety of universities. Education is a process of change, so we are continuing to introduce great ideas to help our students prepare for the global community beyond the walls of CIS. As Dean of Studies, my role is to oversee and support learning. This includes collaborating to ensure effective delivery and assessment of all curricula throughout the school.
