“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall
In the U.S., taxpayers spend $6 billion on energy costs for K-12 schools each year which is more than what is spent on textbooks and computers combined. In Germany, 40% of renewable energy is owned by individuals and communities. In the U.K. it is a fraction of clean energy operations. It is our belief that schools can and should help make community renewables a familiar sight and an attractive proposition, especially in India. As one of the best international schools in Bangalore and the only one to function completely on solar energy, Canadian International School (CIS) has a clear understanding that the benefits of going green transcend cost saving.
It has always been our aim to provide unique learning opportunities for our students and to create energy- and sustainability-conscious students who will have a crucial impact on our planet and its future. The curricula at CIS is developed in such a way so as to ensure students are able to make the connect between what is being taught in the classroom and real-life situations. Our initiative to go green was also embedded within the teachings. Since solar panels are a highly visible addition, it serves as an ideal starting point for showing students how their studies apply to everyday life and how they can have a role in creating a better, more empowered future.
With solar systems installed right on our campus, students are able to see first-hand how sunlight is converted to electricity and learning opportunities have been integrated into math, science, and technology-led programs to broaden a student’s experience, understanding and exposure. In addition to enhancing education, by installing solar panels, we have the opportunity to motivate students to explore a new career field they otherwise might not have considered. We want to raise students who become interested to specialize in using environmentally conscious design and technology to improve sustainability and promote conservation of our available natural resources.
After all, it is up to us to remember,
The future of our children,
The future of our planet,
It’s in our hands.
At Canadian International School, the future is bright with solar energy.
CIS is a culturally-rich mosaic, serving each student by providing a world-class international education, nurturing potential, developing life-long skills, and preparing students for an ever-changing global community.
