What is your greatest memory from school? Is it one of a field trip you took, or an extracurricular activity you participated in, or is it a project that you did in your Science class? Contextual Learning is a memory making experience at CIS. Its mission is to provide students with an experiential education opportunity to further CIS’s core values of joy, integrity, inspiration, respect, and caring. Students explore global and local issues, find solutions to real-world problems; meet people, discover places, and discuss ideas they would not normally come in contact with otherwise.
CL consists of two Discovery components: On-campus and On-site. Students and their parents get to choose which component they want to pursue throughout the school year. On-campus, students engage in the program within Bangalore and the state of Karnataka. During On-site, students travel to other parts of India to engage in the similar experience. In addition, CIS runs 5 full CL days throughout the year. Those take place during a full school day and have a theme/ focus of their own.
Each grade level has a focus that is developmentally appropriate to their age group. Here are some of the questions our students explore during the program.
6th Grade: A Focus on Self-Awareness
Who am I? What do I believe in? Who do I want to become when I grow up? How do I work in a team? How do I face challenges?
7th Grade: Greater Understanding of my Community
What role do I play in my community? Does my voice matter? How can I use technology for social innovation? What impact do I have on the lakes and forests around me?
8th Grade: Compassion and Communication
Who are the people around me? What are their religions, their backgrounds, their aspirations? What does it mean to be different? What can I learn about myself by serving others? What makes a group of people a team?
